While departing on your getaway with an airline like Virgin Atlantic is exciting, for some, packing can be the most daunting part of travel. Planning ahead and knowing about an airline’s baggage allowance will save you a ton of hassle in the long run.

If you’re travelling on Virgin Atlantic with baggage, it’s best to be prepared! This article has everything you need to know about Virgin Atlantic baggage allowance, and how to navigate flying with luggage. Similar to flying with most airlines, those travelling with Virgin Atlantic will have the option of bringing hand baggage and checked baggage.

While both types of baggage are held on-board your flight, hand baggage can be brought with you in the cabin, whereas checked baggage gets stored in a freight or cargo compartment in the plane. Both hand baggage and checked baggage have their restrictions.


Hand Baggage Allowance

Each ticket booked with Virgin Atlantic includes hand baggage.

Hand baggage is usually much smaller than your usual vacation trunk, and include luggage like backpacks, overnight bags, and small suitcases.

They must be able to fit in the overhead compartment above you in the cabin, and hand baggage must not exceed a maximum of 23 x 36 x 56cm in size.


Hand Baggage Allowance by Class

Economy and Premium passengers are only allotted one hand baggage with the purchase of a ticket. Your bag should be no heavier than 10kg.

However, upper-class passengers can carry up to two hand luggage per person not exceeding 12kg for each bag and 16kg combined. This will work well when wanting to travel with an extra technology bag.

As for children, babies, and toddlers up to 24 months have a hand baggage allowance of 6kg. Collapsible pushchairs and car seats are also allowed to add.


Checked Baggage

Unlike hand baggage, not all tickets come with check-in baggage included. Economy Light tickets don’t include checked baggage - you’ll have to pay if you’d like to have this covered.

Those flying with Virgin Atlantic’s Economy Classic and Delight Classes will have an allowance of one checked baggage.

While passengers booked in the Premium Class are allowed two checked baggage, check-in baggage should be inspected to make sure that they weigh no more than 23kg and are no more than 90 x 75 x 43cm.

Those flying with an Upper-Class ticket are allowed to travel with up to three pieces of checked baggage weighing no more than 32kg with the same size requirements as the previous classes. For seated children and infants, the same applies.

For children seated on the lap of passengers, they’ll be allowed one piece of checked luggage, weighing a maximum of 23kg.


Additional Baggage

If passengers go beyond the above baggage allowance, they’ll be charged 65 USD per oversized bag. You can also add more baggage which you can purchase online or at the airport.

You can purchase up to seven additional baggage spaces during online check-in. Any more bags and you’ll have to buy them exclusively through the airport.

Each person is responsible for their baggage, and purchasing extra baggage is non-transferable between tickets.
